Wedding Tips

Should I Hire A Photographer or Videographer

Many brides struggle whether to include a videographer in their budget. Unfortunately the value of a videographer is often not considered until after the fact. According to a recent poll 70% of brides surveyed that did not use videographers regretted it. Stating that so much of their wedding day was a blur and that because of stress they really could not remember the details of it.  Being a professional videographer in the wedding industry I would highly recommend the services of both.

Why is it significant to hire the services of both? You have to understand that professional photographers and professional videographers have different purposes. Note the term professional because many people conclude that the services are interchangeable and therefore one would be as good as the other. That might be true when you are dealing with people that are not professionals in the field, but it is not true when you are dealing with professionals.

This is the reason why, professional photographers are not just interested in capturing images. They are not concerned with just putting 1,000 pictures on a disc and concluding a job well done. They are interested in detail, editing, visual appeal, composition and compositing. All with the objective of creating a library of memories.

One of the photographers that we work with spent 30 hours just removing sand that you could barely notice from a photo shoot on a beach. A person concerned with just images would not have done that, because in actuality the sand was barely noticeable. But professionals are concerned with detail and anything even remotely noticeable counts. That is why their prices are higher. You will get the best service and less regrets using a professional.

A professional videographer is not interested in just capturing a picture. Anyone can point and click a camera. They are concerned with capturing emotions and then taking those images, tell a story and then develop them into an art form.  The difference between a professional videographer and a standard videographer is where the production actually takes place. With a standard videographer the production takes place in the camera. With a professional videographer the production takes place in the mind and that can not be recreated. Each image shot and edited has a specific purpose to create a legacy. So you truly do get what you pay for.  You see, a professionally v/s standard can have the same equipment yet the results of the end production will be extensively different because to one it is just another image and to the other it is an art form.

So in essence a photographer is excellent if you only wish to remember elements of the event, but a videographer is essential if you want to remember the day, they tell the story. The photographer captures that grandma was there, the videographer captures what grandma was doing. These things become precious as time goes by and as some depart into eternity, a photograph will never be able to recreate that.

One of the dearest events that we ever produced was a 50 year anniversary. The family fought the entire time trying to pull the event together. Some of them did not want to participate and thought getting a videographer was not all that necessary. It was absolutely crazy. But somehow in the end, they all got together and pulled it off.

The couple did not know that they were being re-married. They were told that they needed to stop by the church because someone had left something at church at a prior service. When they walked through the door everybody was there, they walked down a candle lit aisle and re-married in a beautiful ceremony. We captured every shred of emotion the entire evening and it was wonderful.

Three months later the wife died unexpectedly in her sleep. What do think the family concluded was most valuable at that time? Was it the joy, laughter, and funny moments of mom having the happiest day of her life that they had all captured from the video or was it the picture of her smile?  Family members concluded that they were so glad to have the video.

You might say, well I can't afford both. I find that a weak excuse because most people say that without ever really investigating the cost. Most professional videographers and photographers have budget plans or will at least work out payment options that make it affordable. So it really all boils down to what you value.

If you want to see some pro's at work, I would recommend these sites, their work is amazing:

This will give you an idea of the difference between just capturing images and what  professionals that love their work and respect your memories do. Hopefully it will help you to truly be able to evaluate what you really want. My hope is that you will not cheat yourself of the joy of maintaining a once in a lifetime event. They really are worth it.

I've been married 20 years and the best thing that I could ever have done for myself concerning my wedding day was to have both at the event. The funny thing is, my wedding album sits in my closet, wrapped in plastic and has not been viewed in years, yet my video gets played every anniversary and it is a joy to watch. I am wonderfully transported back into time and can experience the sight, the sound, and the sheer emotions of the happiest day of my life.

Avoiding The Photographer and Videographer From Hell

Your wedding day ought to be the most memorable and the most wonderful event of a lifetime. There is absolutely no greater let down than when you get the copies of what should have represented your dream come back as substandard because your videographer and your photographer did a horrible job. And I bet you probably know someone that experienced the photographer and videographer from hell. Here are some helpful hints to keep you from getting burned.

1. If you want a photographer and a videographer do not select them separately. Ask your photographer or videographer to recommend someone that they have successfully worked with in the past. This is critical because chemistry has a lot to do with how your end results will be. When photographers and videographers have worked together in the past, they know each others style and will respect each others shots. Otherwise things become very territorial and unless the photographer and the videographer come to terms before the event you run the risk of not getting the absolute best because instead of working together they will be working from the standpoint of avoiding getting in each others shots. If you do not wish to have the photographer and the videographer from a recommended source, at least try to get them together before your wedding to establish ground rules.

2. Understand that you really do get what you pay for. Many people want to have a great videographer and a great photographer at a budget price. You will be able to find them, and you will get a production from them. However, since the work of the photographer and the videographer will represent your lasting memories, I would recommend getting those that price within the industry. Because if your photographer or videographer is charging industry rates then they know what industry professionals are defined as. Which means they will have commercial industry equipment and work with commerical industry editing software, and they will be trained in creative imaging. This sets them a part and is the work is worth the investment. You pictures and videos will not be point and click. They will creative and stunning.

3. View samples of their work and read their contracts. Most videographers and photographers will have a demo for you to view. If you don't get a demo at least ask for references. A good videographer and photographer will have a contract. They normally will require a percentage down, full payment before the event and rights to use your wedding for promotions. This is pretty standard.

4.  Cooperate with your photography or videography professional. Lighting is a critical element and there are many factors that effect this. If your photographer and videographer recommends a particular lighting level work with them because it will ensure your best footage. Other things that present problems are buildings with lots of glass or shooting in direct sunlight. Your photographer or videographer may recommend changing somethings because of this. I would recommend working with them.

5. If you wish to meet with your photographer or videographer request meetings only after you have researched what you want that way you will be ready to make a contract when you meet with them. They will appreciate you for respecting their time. I personally have had meetings with clients that were not ready to make a contract during the meeting and then when they were ready the time was already booked. Please don't miss the opportunity to work with a quality professional. Do all your homework first  and then be ready to select a vendor.

6. Be kind to your photographer or videographer. You will be surprised how many upgrades you can get for free just by working with them in a kind manner.

7. Ask persons that used photographers and videographers at their weddings to make recommendations.

8. Ask questions and here are a few good ones:
How much time will it take to get my video back? If it is shorter than 3-4 weeks barring any previous edits that must be finished before your event I would want to know more. Quality productions take time.
What editing software do you use? Professional photographers will usually use high end Adbobe type programs for paint, touch up and creative composites. Professional videographers will ususally use Adobe Premier for PC and Final Cut Pro for Macs.
Ask them about their upgrades. These type people are very creative and you might find a few things that are available that you did not know existed. Such as streaming the video live for guest that can make the wedding. Or have a site where your wedding can be displayed for 30 days for people we weren't able to make it. Also the can make copies for anyone that you would like. Videographers also offer video thank you cards for about $7-$10 a DVD.

9. If your photographer or videographer knows other wedding professionals ask them about it, because it can make your event easier and quicker to plan.

10. Ask about specials. Photographer and videographers often run specials.  They discount deposits and even give some events for free. Their promotional opportunities can work out wonders for your budget. Here are some places to find discounted or free stuff in addition to opportunites run by photographer and videographers:

About.com wedding freebies - they have a lot of good stuff
Bridal Freebies.com - they have a lot of good stuff and lots of variety
theislandminister.com - this is a very good site to find great stuff in Texas

With these pointers in mind you will be well equipped to avoid the photographer and videographer from hell. Good luck on your upcoming special day.

5 Ways To Plan For Your Big Day

Preparing for a wedding can be a time of joy or a time of sheer pandamonium. Here are ten tips to make this time enjoyable.

1.Plan early
Six monts to a year should give you sufficient time to paln for your big day. Though it seems as if that is a long way out, the months go by very quickly and before you know it the day is upon you. Planning early will also help you with budgeting your event. Once your plans are laid out try to stick to them as much as possible. The less deviation you have the less stressful the event will be.
2. Use professionals
Shift as much of your planning into the hands of professionals as possible. When tension begins to rise as the day approaches having lots of family involved can cause some unpleasant issues. Consider using an event planner, hire a team of persons for video, photography, sound, decorating, catering, cake decorating, and even travel planning. Work with these people very closely and you will find that your day will be fantastic.
3.Set a budget
Any bride can have a dream wedding, just know what's involved before you get started so that there is no sticker shock involved. If you can't afford the clear glass plates that you wanted, get a clear glass plastic plate and improvise. If you had certain table setting in mind, but they are more expensive than you thought shop around a stores that have clearance items and see if you can find a substitute. Instead of the 25,000 dollar gown that you know you may not be able to afford, find the local seamstress that can make a dead ringer imitation of it. Set your goals high and then scale it down until it is the right price for you, with as much as what you want possible.
4. Location
Keep in mind that lots of people may want to get married in the same location that you want. Planning early makes it possible to get the location. Sometimes you might have in mind a certain time you wish to get married but the location is not available. Instead of getting upset about it, ask if they have another time on the same day. This is often available and can save you money. For example to book an evening reception at a hotel is more expensive because of the food, booking during lunch hours can save you money.
5.Bridal Registries
When selecting bridal registries consider everyoone's budget. Try registering at different price range stores, this may make guest feel more comfortable with their ability to purchase a gift. Consider stores like Neiman Marcus for one, Macy's for another, and Walmart for a third option.
